Goals make the difference for The Saints
Cassiobury Park in Watford played host to a hotly contested Herts county Championship match between Glen Rovers and St Colmcilles on Sunday afternoon, a game in which the goals made all the difference.
In perfect playing conditions, it was the home side who seized the initiative after points were traded early on, with an early goal giving them the perfect head start.
But The Saints were still fresh from their victory against St Josephs the week before, and it didn’t take long for a reaction from the Visitors. Points were still being traded at either end, before two well taken St Colmcilles goals in two minutes left Rovers stunned.
As the half went on, the intensity from both teams increased, and the referee had his work cut out to ensure tensions didn’t boil over as a couple of players from either side went into the book. Half time shortly followed, but not before two more points and a third goal from The Saints, and with only one Glen Rovers point in response, the scores were 3-06 to 1-04.
The early stages of the second half were similar to that of the first, with neatly taken points being fired over from both teams. It didn’t take long for St Colmcilles to increase their advantange however, scoring a well worked fourth goal and surely sticking a nail in the coffin of their hosts.
Tempers were begging to flare, and 12 minutes into the second half both teams were down to 14 as a scrap ensued just inside the Colmcilles half of the field.
Glen Rovers scored 4 points in a row to keep themselves in touching distance, before a late fifth goal from Colmcilles rounded off the scoring for the afternoon and saw them comfortably through to the final whistle. The Saints were delighted to make the short trip home as victors.
