13.00: Éire Óg 1-10 Glen Rovers 1-05
Round 2 of the Hertfordshire Football League threw in on Sunday with last year's champions Éire Óg up against local Watford side Glen Rovers. Oxford made the brighter start with points from Dave Walsh and Piers McGlynn within 5 minutes. A strong wind favoured Oxford but Rovers hit back after 10 minutes with a long range free Eoin Ó Sé. With both sides wasteful in the weather, McGlynn kicked two points following the water break, leaving Oxford 4 to 1 up after 20 minutes. A black card for Watford’s full back seemed to drive the home side on, the next two scores from a Steve McNicholas free and a point from Brian Coyle. Waterford man Stephem Molumphy then struck back with a point, followed by one from Colin Forde to extend the Éire Óg advantage to 3 at half time.
Following the restart, McGlynn barrelled through on goal, only to see his shot fly back off the Watford upright, but made amends with a point a minute later and then again in the 38th minute. Glen Rovers failed to make the most of early half possession, kicking three wides, while Barry Mitchell had a goal; chance on the 44th minute but kicked over the bar. Another point from McGlynn left Glen Rovers needing goals and sustained pressure on the Oxford square resulted in Mitchell blasting past the Éire Óg keeper from close range. Rovers won the resulting kick out and Ó Sé took a sweet point to leave the scores at Éire Óg 0-9, Glen Rovers 1-05 with 10 to play. Oxford then kept possession well but failed to convert into points with 4 wides, before Walsh settled nerves their nerves with deserved point with 5 left. Pressure on the Watford kick out led to a goal from corner back John Corrigan, settling the tie on 60 minutes. Glen Rovers will take some positives from their first outing of the season, having given debuts to several homegrown players. Final score Éire Óg 1-10 Glen Rovers 1-05.
15:00 St. Colmcilles 0-00 St. Vincents 0-00
St. Colmcilles were awarded a 5 point victory after St. Vincents had to unfortunately withdraw.
17.00 St. Josephs 4-17 St. Dympnas 0-07
Frank Dillon took the whistle for the final game of the weekend, with St. Josephs of Waltham Cross taking on St. Dympnas of Luton. A dominant performance from a developing St. Josephs panel saw them bounce back from an opening day loss to Oxford to secure a handsome victory over St. Dympnas of Luton. Joes opened the game as they meant to go on with no fewer than 6 different scorers pushing them out into strong early lead. Chief among these were Darragh Gallagher and Michael Downey with 1-01 each, three points from Hugo Harding and two for Shane Tubbs. Dympnas were able to respond with three points of their own but left themselves with a large deficit to make up in the second half. There was little reprieve following the break, with Gallagher and Tubbs adding two points each to their respective tallies and Harding cementing a strong season opening with 1-02 on top of his earlier collection. Mattis grabbed two points for Joes, while Colum Rice opened his account with a late point. Dympnas took 4 scores of their own but it was not enough to dent the Waltham Cross lead. Final score: St. Josephs 4-17 St. Dympnas 0-07
