Cambridge Parnells U14’s
Match Report;
Cambridge Parnells and St.Dympnas played out a very entertaining U14 league final on Tuesday night (10th July) in Waltham Cross.
No less than 9 players from the recent Hertfordshire All Ireland Winning Feile squad were part of the teams who came 1st and 2nd respectively in the league campaign. The only absentee from the 2 clubs was Tiernan Carvill of Cambridge, who had to watch from the sidelines due to the broken collarbone that he suffered in the All Ireland Final! The player was well received by both sets of players and parents!
With Hertfordshire captain Oli Maund and Eoin Collins (Cambridge) lining up in midfield against fellow county players Cathal Fee and Nyles White (St.Dympnas), this promised to be a strongly contested battle, and it didn't disappoint!
St.Dympnas opened the scoring early on with a goal and a point to open up an early lead before Francis Munnelly of Cambridge settled his team down with two calmly taken frees. This gave Cambridge a brief spell of control where they scored two goals through Munnelly and Pat Niland and a further two points to open up a 2-4 to 1-1 lead with 10 minutes to go in the first half. Cambridge then won a penalty to have a chance to pull ahead, however Dympnas goalkeeper Aaron livingstone did just enough to put Oli Maund off in the build up and the ball bounced off the post! Cambridge would live to rue that miss as Dympnas hit back with 3 goals on the bounce, 2 of which were from the ever tenacious Cathal Fee, and a further point to finish the half ahead by 1! (2-4 to 3-2).
St.Dympnas continued to dominate at the start of the second half and quickly got a point on the board with Cambridge continuing to labour in the summer heat. Several goal attempts by Cambridge were impressively saved by Livingstone as the Parnells grew frustrated. A long solo run up the pitch with a good finish for a point by Parnells captain Eoin Collins helped to settle his side once more and lead the way to a further point by Cormac Collins to even the scores. Both sides exchanged scores again before Cambridge edged ahead for the first time in the second half with a further point. St.Dypmnas weren't finished yet however, as they scored a long range goal from Cathal Fee to put his side up by 2 points again.
More drama followed in the last 5 minutes as St.Dympnas won a penalty of their own. Leo D'Appolonio stepped into the Cambridge goal and saved the low penalty from Cathal Fee with his left leg. This proved pivotal as the turnover brought Cambridge up the field where they remained for most of the remainder. Frustration continued to play its' part however as Cambridge snatched at goal chances only for the lively Livingstone to keep them at bay. Two points from Cambridge were all they could muster from several attempts but it was just enough to even up the scores before Oli Maund had the final say with a pointed 45 and a free kick off the ground to put Cambridge 2 ahead just before the final whistle blew!
Final Score Cambridge Parnells 2-12 to St.Dympnas 4-4
