Cambridge Parnells - U14 League and Championship winners 2018
Match report;
Cambridge Parnells met St.Colmcilles in the U14 Championship final on Wednesday evening in the last competitive fixture this year. It proved to be a fantastic finish to a great year for the U14s in Hertfordshire!
Colmcilles were coming into the game in good form after some impressive performances at the All Britain Championships where their U13's were beaten late in the cup semi final by eventual winners Tara, and their U15's made it to the Shield final! They were missing a few of their recent Hertfordshire All-Ireland Feile winners on Wednesday, however it didn't stop them starting this match very strong!
St.Colmcilles rushed into a 1-3 to 0-0 lead in the first 5 minutes, the goal coming from Ryan Mangan. Cambridge, who also started slowly in their league final win the week before, then settled a little, notching 4 points to no reply. Colmcilles were dominating in the middle by way of good high fielding and relentless running by Mangan and Felix Coleman! This resulted in another 2 points for Colmcilles. The second point finally brought a reaction from the Cambridge players who scored a goal through a trademark Oli Maund solo run through the middle to make it a 1 point game at the half way through the first half (1-4 to 1-5).
Cambridge just couldn't handle the quick kickouts by Cian Jelly in the St.Colmcilles goal, which allowed his team to move the ball immediately back up the field to score their second goal, this one a quality finish into the top corner by Kyle Reynolds! Another point followed this goal as Colmcilles threatened to pull away. A big save from Oli Forbes in the Cambridge goal the only thing stopping this from happening. That save brought another response from Parnells who kicked 5 points to no reply to even the game. However the driving runs of Sam Mckenna from Colmcilles half back line and the off-the-shoulder running of the rest of his St.Albans teammates continued to cause Cambridge all sorts of problems, at times seeming like they had an extra player on the field! A third goal soon followed, well finished by Elliot Pate to leave Colmcilles up 3-6(15) to 1-9 (12) at half time.
St.Colmcilles started the second half like they finished the first, however a few wayward shots with no points on the board allowed Cambridge back into the game. They scored 4 points on the bounce to take the lead for the first time! The last point was at the end of a driving run by Eoin Collins, which seemed to give the whole Cambridge team a lift. A goal soon followed, a tidy finish by Joe Maund, and 2 further points by Francis Munnelly. Another goal from the tenacious Joe Mckeag and a second composed finishigh into the net from Joe Maund gave Cambridge a solid lead. Colmcilles never gave up on their game plan however and continued to work the ball up the field tirelessly, only for their final ball to let them down on several occasions,notching just another point for their substantial efforts! Cambridge had the final say with a point through their captain Munnelly, bringing his tally for the day to an impressive 0-9, and completing a historic double for the Cambridge club!
